STERLING CITY, Texas — An ambulance making an emergency run from Sterling City to Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo Tuesday morning at 1:47 a.m. ended tragically when a crash and subsequent fire resulted in three individuals losing their lives.
The ambulance was traveling southbound on U.S. 87, 1.9 miles south of Carlsbad (10 miles north of San Angelo), when it began to lose control on an icy patch of highway, causing the vehicle to slide of the road to the left and into the center median. The driver of the ambulance overcorrected back to the right, crossing both southbound lanes before sliding off the right side of the highway and hitting the west ditch, where the vehicle rolled. The ambulance came to a stop upside down facing northeast in the west ditch of U.S. 87, where it caught fire and burned, a DPS press release states.
Paramedic Raymond Bernard Allison, 52, as well as the patient, 45-year-old Jose Cruz Gonzales Gurrola, and a laborer named Anacleto Gonzalez Gurrola, 43, all perished in the crash. The three victims were pronounced dead at the scene by Tom Green County Justice of the Peace Eddie Howard and their bodies were transported to Robert Massie Funeral Home in San Angelo. Allison was from Sterling City, the Gurrolas, who are brothers, were from San Angelo. The driver of the ambulance, 45-year-old Joann Adamiak Moore of Sterling City, was transported to Shannon Medical Center with incapacitating injuries.
