HAVEN, Conn. — A former paramedic who sexually assaulted a drunk, unconscious woman in an ambulance in Hamden is facing sentencing.

Fifty-one-year-old Mark Powell of North Haven is expected to be sentenced to 3½ years in prisonTuesday in New Haven Superior Court. He pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault in April.

Prosecutors say Powell and another paramedic with American Medical Response responded to a party in Hamden early Christmas morning in 2011 to treat an unconscious and intoxicated 22-year-old woman who fell and hit her head while dancing.

The woman told police she woke up in the ambulance and Powell was touching her in a sexual way.

Powell’s plea bargain also calls for him to serve 10 years of probation after prison and register as a sex offender.
