CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. — A West Virginia paramedic was injured after a chunk of ice went through the windshield of a moving ambulance last week.
Cabell County paramedics were transporting a patient last Wednesday when the large piece of ice detached from a tractor-trailer and flew through the windshield, Cabell County EMS Director Gordon Merry told WSAZ.
The paramedic driving the ambulance sustained cuts to his face but kept control of the ambulance, avoiding a crash, officials said. The medic was then transported to the hospital, and another ambulance carried the patient the rest of the way to a hospital in Ohio.
No one else was injured in the incident. Merry said the ice hit the A-post of the rig to the side of the windshield, which prevented a worse outcome. The impact sent pieces of glass into the cab, which embedded into the steering wheel. Merry said the steering wheel, dashboard and possibly the driver’s seat of the rig will need to be replaced.
