Phoenix Fire Dept. ambulance fatally strikes man while leaving station

Officials said firefighters were driving the ambulance to a call when they hit a man who was standing outside of the bay doors

PHOENIX — Firefighters who were en route to a call in an ambulance fatally struck a man who was outside of the fire department.

AZ Family reported that the Phoenix Fire Department crew was pulling out of the station when they said they heard a thump as they were exiting the bay doors, according to police Sgt. Armando Carbajal.

“They looked in their rearview mirror to investigate and saw that there was a backpack on the ground,” Sgt. Carbajal said.

The unidentified man was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next day.

Officials said no one knows why the man was standing outside of the bay doors. The incident is currently under investigation.
