SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. — A patient injured when an ambulance crashed head-on into a utility pole is being taken off life support, according to her family.
Janet Hickey, 60, suffered multiple head and neck injuries when the ambulance, which was not using lights and sirens, crossed the roadway and hit the pole.
“There were attempts to revitalize her, but we weren’t left with much of a choice, Hickey’s brother, Jay Doyle, told The Journal News.
The SeniorCare Emergency services ambulance, driven by a 19-year-old, was not using lights or sirens, and was transporting Hickey to Phelps Memorial Hospital for rehab after brain surgery. She was taken to Westchester Medical Center after the crash, and declared brain dead, Doyle said.
The driver and 55-year-old EMT suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, which is under investigation.
