CHICAGO — Three people were injured, one of them seriously, when an ambulance crashed into a car stopped on the shoulder of Interstate 355 on Tuesday morning, officials said.
Illinois state troopers were called about 6 a.m. to milepost 4.5 on Veterans Memorial Tollway near the Homer and Will county line, according to a news release. The driver of the ambulance, which did not contain any patients at the time, likely caused the crash when the ambulance crossed over onto the right shoulder, striking a stopped black Volkswagen Passat.
It wasn’t immediately clear why the Passat was on the shoulder. When the Superior Ambulance bus hit the rear of the Passat, the impact caused the ambulance to roll onto its side and push the Passat across all lanes of traffic, partially ejecting its driver, according to the release from Trooper Duane Chappell, a spokesman for state police.
Emergency crews from the Lockport Township Fire Protection District pulled the driver of the Passat from the vehicle and took the driver to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said.
The driver and a passenger in the ambulance were being treated for injuries not considered life-threatening, Chappell said.
The crash remains under investigation.
