SAN ANTONIO — A car crashed into an ambulance carrying a patient in San Antonio early Wednesday, injuring an EMS provider and trapping the driver of the car.
Officials reported that the car struck the back of the ambulance at an intersection, causing the driver to be pinned and the car to block the back doors of the rig, according to KENS5. Firefighters worked for 25 minutes to extricate the trapped driver, then cut the car away from the ambulance doors so the patient inside could be transferred to another rig.
The driver, a man in his 20s, was transported to the hospital in serious condition, officials said. The EMS provider who was driving the ambulance was also hospitalized with injuries.
A preliminary investigation found that speed was likely a factor in the collision, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.
According to KSAT, the ambulance was stopped at a red light when the crash occurred.
