CEDAR GROOVE, N.C. — One was killed following an incident that involved an EMS ambulance and a small pickup truck on NC Hwy 49 South on Monday. The accident remains under investigation.
According to information from the scene, private ambulance EMS Unit Piedmont 31 was carrying a patient when it notified the 911 center that it had been involved in an accident and the other vehicle was on fire. Several ambulances, Ash-Rand Rescue and Westside Fire Department responded to the accident.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The patient Piedmont 31 was transporting at the time was picked up by a Randolph County EMS unit and transported to the hospital for evaluation. According to Piedmont Triad Ambulance and Rescue chief Paula Linberry, the ambulance’s EMS crew received only minor injuries.
The highway was to remain closed until troopers with the North Carolina Highway Patrol finished their investigation and crews were able to clear the highway.
