LOWELL, Mass. — A city worker was transported to a Boston hospital by MedFlight helicopter after being injured on the job yesterday, officials said.

The Department of Public Works employee fell late yesterday morning while working inside 77 Arch St. Police say he suffered a fall and appeared to be badly hurt. They are not releasing his name at this time.

The DPW worker was taken to Regatta Field, a designated landing point for MedFight. He was then flown to Boston Medical Center.

“The injuries appear to be serious,” said Capt. Randall Humphrey.

The injured man had been working at the site of what will be a garage and maintenance facility for all police vehicles. The property was acquired by the city last Thursday.

Adam Baacke, assistant city manager, said the worker did not see the dark stairwell that led to the basement inside the one-story building. He had been loading materials onto the building so that renovation work soon can begin, said Baacke.

Baacke said the worker never lost consciousness. He said that based on information from people at the hospital, the worker could have leg and arm injuries.

“All of our thoughts are really with him and his family, and we hope he recovers quickly,” said Baacke. “Everyone here is really pulling for him.”
