COLUMBIA, Mo. — One person was injured and at least four cows have died following a five-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on a bridge near Columbia, officials said.

Boone County firefighters responded around 10:14 a.m. to the Missouri River Bridge just west of Columbia after the crash involving a cattle trailer, a semi-truck and three other vehicles, said Assistant Chief Gale Blomenkamp with the Boone County Fire Protection District.

The crash closed westbound Interstate 70 in all lanes on the bridge and all but one of the eastbound lanes, causing backups for drivers. Officials are diverting traffic to U.S. Highway 40 through Booneville. Blomenkamp said both trucks will need to be removed from the bridge before officials can reopen the route.

One person was transported from their vehicle to a hospital with moderate injuries. Blomenkamp said he was conscious and able to talk to officials at the scene.

Of the 57 cows in the cattle trailer, four were pronounced dead at the scene. Others were transported to a facility to be treated.
