Man survives 70-foot fall off bridge while helping car crash victims

He stepped over a guardrail to avoid an oncoming car at the scene, plummeting to the water below

STOYSTOWN, Pa. — A man who pulled over to help after seeing a car crash jumped over a guardrail to avoid being hit by a passing car, and fell 70 feet off a bridge.

Dan Vasos and Mike Kozach were driving from Stoystown, Pa. to take his trailer to Florida. On Interstate 95 near the South Carolina and Georgia state line, they saw a car in front of them push another car into the guardrail around 5 a.m. Friday.

“A car wrecked in front of us and we stopped to give them a hand,” Vasos said told WJACTV.com. “Traffic wouldn’t slow down at all, so my buddy parked his truck behind the car.”

An oncoming car then came toward Vasos. He didn’t have time to check his surroundings, and stepped over the guardrail to avoid being hit.

“I just remember stepping over the barrier and then I was in water trying to get out,” he said. He plummeted nearly 70 feet off the bridge.

It took about 45 minutes for responders to rescue Vasos. He suffered three broken ribs and several other internal injuries, but it expected to recover.

“They just can’t believe I’m alive,” Vasos said. “I hit a piece of cement at the bottom.”
