HOUSTON — A man was rescued from a 10-foot manhole after being trapped for six days.
ABC13 reported that a rescue crew was sent to save the homeless man after construction workers called 911 when they heard his cries for help overnight.
The man, 40, said he had spent six nights in the hole, but Houston Fire Department firefighter Jason Abeldano said he was in good spirits.
“He was in good mental health for the amount of time he said he was down there. He was laughing and joking,” Abeldano said.
Abeldano went down into the hole to pull the victim to safety. He said the man had an injured ankle.
“That was his main complaint. He said, ‘What am I going to do with my leg on the way up?’ And I was like, ‘You are just going to have to hold it until you get up. It’s only going to take a few seconds,’” Abeldano said.
The man did not suffer any severe injuries, and officials said the hole will soon be covered properly.
