Few television shows have had as big of an impact on the EMS field as NBC’s 1970s drama “Emergency!” Airing from 1972 to 1979, the series not only entertained viewers, but also helped shape public awareness of the paramedic profession. Now, EMS providers and paramedics can revisit the high-intensity rescues of Squad 51 by streaming the show on NBC’s Peacock.

‘Emergency!': A trailblazing series

Before “Emergency!” debuted in 1972, medical dramas like “Dr. Kildare” and “Marcus Welby, M.D.” were popular, but none focused on prehospital care. Co-producer Jack Webb worked with the Los Angeles County Fire Department to ensure the series accurately portrayed paramedics, even casting real firefighter Mike Stoker in the role of Engineer Stoker, the National Museum of American History states.

“Emergency!” chronicled the daily operations of the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Station 51, focusing on paramedics John Gage (portrayed by Randolph Mantooth) and Roy DeSoto (Kevin Tighe). The series showcased their daring rescues and the critical medical interventions performed in the field, often in collaboration with the dedicated staff at Rampart General Hospital.

The show’s impact went beyond entertainment. The Atlanta Constitution reported that after “Emergency!” premiered, Los Angeles County expanded its paramedic units from three to 15, crediting the show for generating public support, according to the National Museum of America. Many EMS professionals still cite it as their inspiration for joining the field.
