Changes include the addition of narcotic antagonists, tourniquet applications and wound packing use

WASHINGTON — The Emergency Medical Responder and Emergency Medical Technician National EMS Scope of Practice Model guidelines have been updated to include narcotic antagonists, tourniquet application and the use of wound packing.

The update is a result of a two-year collaboration between the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Office of EMS and the National Association of EMS Officials.

“These changes reflect the ability of EMS personnel at all levels to deliver evidence-based, lifesaving care to members of their communities,” NHTSA Office of EMS director Jon Krohmer said. “The work of NASEMSO, the project leaders and all the stakeholders who participated in the process will advance EMS systems across the country.”
