ORLEANS, Calif. — Wildland firefighter and paramedic Marshall Grant Brookfield died Sept. 29, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Brookfield, 41, had been hospitalized for more than two weeks with COVID-19 and an uncommon fungal infection that has been linked to wildfires and smoke inhalation.

His last deployment was on Sept. 13 to work the McCash Fire in Orleans, Calif., where he is believed to have contracted COVID-19. Brookfield was removed from the scene and hospitalized in an intensive care unit until his death.

Brookfield is survived by his wife, three children and other family members, according to a GoFundMe page created to financially assist his family.
