FDNY EMT arrested in teacher’s killing, suspended without pay

NEW YORK — FDNY EMT Tariq Witherspoon, 30, was arrested Tuesday in connection with a 2021 hit-and-run incident in which a teacher was killed, NBC 4 reported.

Police said that Matthew Jansen, a teacher from Brooklyn, was crossing the street against traffic on his 58th birthday when he was struck by Witherspoon’s Rolls Royce.

Witherspoon has been an EMT for 11 years. He posted bail, and the FDNY suspended him without pay.
