WATSONVILLE, Calif. — A gas leak at a Marchant Street apartment building sent two people to the hospital and displaced more than a dozen late Sunday night.
Investigators from PG&E and the city were searching for the cause of the leak Monday morning.
Watsonville Fire Capt. Corey Schaefer said the smell of natural gas was strong as a fire crew arrived on scene about 11 p.m., and most residents had left the building.
But no one answered hails at a first-floor apartment.
“Fire crews forced entry and found two residents unconscious,” he said.
An ambulance took the couple to Watsonville Community Hospital, where Schaefer said their condition was only reported as “improving.” The American Red Cross stepped in to help the other 11 residents find temporary shelter at a motel.
Schaefer said the incident points to the importance of having carbon monoxide detectors in homes.
The building at 32 Marchant Street is an old Victorian, converted into five apartments.
