NEW BERN, N.C. — EMT Joe Grady died while responding to a call Friday, the Sun Journal reported.

Grady, 38, worked full-time for CarolinaEast EMS and worked as needed for Fort Barnwell and Pamlico County EMS.

CarolinaEast EMS Assistant Chief Phillip Laxton could not confirm the cause of death but said Grady was at work for Fort Barnwell’s EMS agency when the incident happened.

“His partner was inside (a residence) taking care of a patient and she sent him to the truck to retrieve some items they needed for an assessment, and when she realized it had been a period of time that he should have been back, she went outside of the residence to look for him and found him unconscious beside the ambulance,” Laxton said.

She began resuscitative efforts, and Bridgeton EMS and Cove City EMS responded to assist.

“I’m going to tell you man, this is going to be hard on Pamlico, Fort Barnwell and CarolinaEast. Joe was an outstanding person, a very charismatic person; he was a very humble person. You could not have asked for a better human being,” Laxton said.
