PALM BEACH, Fla. — A firefighter-paramedic died Monday after being in a medically-induced coma due to a degenerative heart disease.

Dale McNeill, 44, was diagnosed with giant cell myocarditis in October, a rare heart disease, reported the Palm Beach Post. McNeill had been in a medically-induced coma since Nov. 10 and was placed on a heart transplant waiting list.

“He had complications over the weekend and failed this morning,” McNeill’s older brother, Andy, said.

McNeill leaves behind his wife and three dogs. He served Palm Beach County Fire Rescue for 18 years.

A YouCaring page raised over $45,000 to pay for McNeill’s medical expenses.
