Rescue crew uses drones to help save man trapped across river

The drones were used to “make sure there were no hazards” that the crew members didn’t see

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. — A rescue crew used drones to carry out a swift water rescue Tuesday.

WSLS reported that the Danville Life Saving Crew and the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office were able to use their recent drone training for the first time in real life when a logger was pinned down by a tree.

Danville Life Saving Crew assistant director Bryan Fox said the drones made the incident less stressful.

“We were developing a plan, talking on the radio on the way out. We knew what we were going to do; how many drones we were going to use,” Fox said.

The drones were deployed in minutes and helped make the rescue safer for everyone.

“We were able to navigate the boats around some circumstances in the water, some debris, rock formations, that (the rescuers) didn’t see from the boat as they were trying to navigate,” Fox said.

The drones also helped as the logger was transported across the river.

“The drone could be put up, watch, make sure there was no incident in bringing him up,” Jim Mullins, a Danville Life Saving Crew member, said.
