MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. — A young boy who became stuck on a cliff near Mackinac Island’s Arch Rock was rescued over the weekend by a firefighter who rappelled down to retrieve him.

Firefighters and EMS were called to the east end of the island about 1:20 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, on report of a boy stuck on a cliff about 100 feet above ground.

Firefighters arrived at the scene within 10 minutes. The child, who is believed to be about 10 years old, was hanging onto the rock an estimated 20 to 30 feet below the Arch Rock viewing platform, Mackinac Island Assistant Fire Chief Jason St. Onge said. Onlookers had formed a crowd but it’s unlikely they would’ve been able to reach the boy without rescue gear.
