On Friday, Feb., 24, the American Ambulance Association met with officials from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to discuss how carriers and fiscal intermediaries will recover overpayments due to the initial incorrect Medicare payment rates for 2006. Carriers and fiscal intermediaries will send revised Explanation of Medicare Benefits accompanied by “Demand Letters” that will request a refund of the overpaid amounts to all suppliers and providers. The information CMS provides will include an individual per claim recap of the recovery amount.
We also had the opportunity to discuss the March 27, 2006, Condition Codes implementation process. We are still working with CMS to fully clarify the required action by carriers and fiscal intermediaries in this implementation process.
