CHICAGO — Joe Logan was so rattled after finding a naked newborn baby under his bushes that he had trouble dialing 911 — his shaking hands made him punch the wrong numbers on his phone.
It was only after the 41-year-old Wheaton resident managed to dial the emergency number and report his discovery that he and his wife, Margie, got busy.
They wrapped the whimpering baby boy in a towel, cleaned his mouth and nose so he could breathe easier, then kept him warm until police and paramedics arrived.
On Thursday, the Wheaton couple and their dog, Red, were honored for their actions June 12 in finding and rescuing the 5-pound infant who had been abandoned on the edge of their property.
“I’m proud and blessed I was there,” Joe Logan said after he and his wife — with their two young children watching — received a Citizen Commendation from Wheaton police.
Red, an 8-year-old female mutt, also was commended — she was named an honorary police K-9 for her help in locating the newborn.
Logan had just let out the dog when he and Red heard a whimper from the bushes.
Red began barking “relentlessly,” Logan said, prompting him to investigate and find the baby, whose umbilical cord was still attached.
Nunu Sung, 24, of Wheaton, was charged with child endangerment and obstruction of justice for allegedly dumping the infant there at least two hours before he was found.
The baby has been placed in foster care, authorities have said.
