Thanks to a not-for-profit network, the vehicle will help more than 60,000 people in an impoverished area that has never before been served by an ambulance

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A 1996 ambulance purchased from Lincoln Land Community College was sent to Ghana this month for use by a hospital in that impoverished west African country through the assistance of a Springfield charity and a rural Chatham organization.

The ambulance, a Ford Cutaway van with 35,000 miles on the odometer, previously was used by Lincoln Land’s emergency medical services training program and was purchased at auction for $1,700 by the Springfield-based International Health & Development Network founded by Springfield oncologist Dr. Edem Agamah and his wife, June.

The network also will pay $5,000 to transport the vehicle to Ghana, where it will be used by an outpatient hospital and an attached 60-bed inpatient ward.
