Ford announces ambulance safety recalls

The recalls are related to sudden engine shut down and malfunctioning handles that may cause doors to open during a crash

DEARBORN, Mich. — Ford issued two safety recalls for certain ambulance models that have to do with a defect that causes engines to suddenly shut down and not restart, and malfunctioning door handles.

The first recall is for 2011-2012 Ford F-Series Super Duty ambulances, and 2014-2015 Ford F-Series Super Duty ambulances with 6.7-liter diesel engines.

“The exhaust gas temperature sensors may not function properly, causing the vehicle to incorrectly identify a high temperature condition,” Ford said in statement.

There are 6,322 affected vehicles in the U.S., Canada and Mexico that were built at the Kentucky Truck Plant, Feb. 22, 2010 to Feb. 1, 2015. Dealers will update the software on affected vehicles for free.

The second recall is for certain 2011-2013 Ford Explorer and Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles for problems with the spring on interior door handles.

“If the spring is unseated, the door may become unlatched in a side-impact crash, increasing the risk of injury,” Ford said.

The recall includes 194,484 vehicles in the U.S., Canada and Mexico that were built at the Chicago Assembly Plant, Feb. 1, 2011 to Jan. 31, 2012; June 1, 2012 to June 30, 2012; and Oct. 1, 2012 to Nov. 30, 2012.

Dealers will inspect all four interior door handle assemblies and repair or replace the handles as necessary for free.

The company is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to either recall.
