MERSEYSIDE, England — A thug ran over a Merseyside paramedic tending to a road crash victim with the medic’s car. The paramedic from the North West Ambulance Service was treating the motorists involved in a shunt at the junction of Woodchurch Road and Balls Road East, Birkenhead, when the incident happened.
His high-speed response medical car, an unmarked Audi RS4 filled with life-saving equipment, was parked nearby as he tended to those from the crash when a thief jumped in the driver’s seat.
The paramedic stood in front of the car to try to stop it being taken, but the yob drove straight at him.
Despite trying to get out of the way, the medic was hit by the corner of the bonnet and knocked to the floor.
He escaped with only grazing to his elbow.
The Audi was recovered with all of its contents — minus the keys — a short time later near to the Shrewsbury pub in Oxton Village.
Police today slammed the thief as “despicable”.
DC Sarah Casement, from Wirral CID, said: “An attack such as this, on a paramedic who was ECHO mobile For news/sport/life text ECHO to 67800 helping another at the scene of a traffic collision, is despicable.
“Incidents such as this are taken very seriously and I would appeal to the public for their help in catching whoever was responsible for this crime.
“Thankfully the car was recovered with all of its contents. However it has meant that it was off the road for a couple of days, while its locks were changed.”
Director of Emergency Service at North West Ambulance Service Derek Cartwright said: “I am at a loss to understand the reason behind mindless actions such as this, against a service which exists purely to help people.”
