Survey: 1/3 of Iowa EMTs can’t provide 24-hour service

The state association called the coverage gap “a big issue” while identifying significant problems in the EMS management system

DES MOINES, Iowa — More than one-third of surveyed Iowa emergency medical technicians say they cannot provide 24-hour coverage in their service areas, according to the Iowa Emergency Medical Services Association.

The state association, which represents 12,000 Iowa EMTs, recently surveyed its members to identify their biggest concerns with the state’s EMS system.

A total of 887 individuals responded to the survey. When asked to specify the number of hours per day their service was unable to provide coverage, only 65 percent of the respondents said they were capable of 24-hour coverage.
