MESA, Ariz. — Responders who helped in the heroic save of a woman trapped in a canal recalled the experience.

FOX 10 reported that a woman called 911 to report that she was trapped in her vehicle and submerged in a canal during a monsoon.

“She insisted through the whole call that she was in the intersection,” dispatcher Monica Payne said.

“You could actually hear the water coming up, we could hear the water flowing in the vehicle,” dispatcher Julie Briones said.

Payne and Briones worked together to get firefighters to the canal, who worked as fast as possible when they arrived to rescue the woman from the water, which was rising quickly.

“I reached down, tried to unbuckle the seatbelt... that was when somebody grabbed my hand,” Mesa firefighter Kyle Kuball said.

Kuball said the fire captain devised a plan to lower the ladder to the car.

“Once I was able to get her on the ladder and turn her over, all I was concerned about was letting her know she was OK and then making sure there was no one else in the vehicle, and she was able to tell me that,” Kuball said.

All of the responders involved said they are very grateful that their race against time was successful.
