Off-duty SC paramedics, nurses help save crash victim

A bystander pulled a motorcyclist away from the burning motorcycle; the paramedics and nurses assisted the victim until responders arrived

BEAUFORT, S.C. — A car versus motorcycle wreck on Robert Smalls Parkway near Burton Hill Road in Beaufort resulted in serious injuries to the motorcyclist Wednesday afternoon.

A Toyota and a motorcycle collided around 1:30 p.m., according to a Burton Fire District news release. The motorcyclist was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital. No one in the car was transported to the hospital.

The motorcycle was engulfed in flames that began spreading toward the car, according to the release.

A bystander pulled the motorcyclist away from the burning motorcycle and two off-duty nurses from Beaufort Memorial Hospital and two off-duty paramedics assisted the individual until emergency responders arrived, according to the release.

The roadway was blocked off for about 30 minutes while emergency crews attended to the injured and cleared the scene.
