GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. — American Medical Response (AMR) announced today the appointment of Angela Fiege, M.D., as the NASCAR/AMR Safety Team medical director.

As a physician medical consultant to NASCAR for the past two years, she has been instrumental in enhancing on-track care and advocating for the health and safety of drivers and crew members. She will build upon her efforts to advance the medical care and emergency response services in motor sports as she leads AMR’s NASCAR team.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Fiege to the team,” said Edward M. Racht, M.D., chief medical officer, AMR. “With her extensive background in motor sports and her expertise in emergency medicine and neurocritical care, Dr. Fiege brings a unique and highly specialized level of expertise to the team. She is passionate about medicine in motor sports, and her collaborative leadership style will help build on the strong commitment of NASCAR to strengthen safety on the track.”

As a consultant, she has supported physicians with infield care and on-track response at all NASCAR-sponsored racetrack events. In her new role, she will continue collaborating with NASCAR Medical Liaisons and NASCAR Consulting Physicians in addition to guiding the services provided by AMR.

She has also presented several lectures on driver and crew safety at NASCAR’s annual summits and, in 2017, earned the organization’s Above and Beyond award for her exceptional work.

Fiege has held a diverse range of caregiver roles in her nearly 30-year healthcare career. She has spent the past 12 years as a staff physician at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital, caring for patients and teaching hospital residents in a variety of emergency and acute care settings.

In February 2017, NASCAR and AMR, a national leader in emergency medical services, announced a partnership to expand the capabilities of NASCAR’s medical support model and strengthen on-track incident response. State licensed physicians and paramedics from AMR will respond to incidents and provide on-scene assessments at all of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series weekends.

Fiege began her career in emergency medical services at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis as a paramedic and later as a staff nurse. She then spent nearly 20 years as a flight nurse at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital. Her experience on the track extends to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where she spent a decade providing care at mass gatherings and spectator events, as well as on-track rescue for the Brickyard 400 and Indianapolis 500.
