COOS BAY, Ore. — Search teams with dogs have found and rescued a diabetic mushroom picker who spent the night in woods on the Oregon coast after he grew too weak to walk out.

The Coos County sheriff’s office says 56-year-old Robert Palmer was found Monday afternoon, weak and unable to move on his own. Search teams spent three hours packing him nearly 2 miles to a road to meet a waiting ambulance.

He was taken to an area hospital, but his condition wasn’t immediately available Monday evening.

The sheriff’s office said earlier that the man’s brother, 55-year-old David Palmer of North Bend, left him behind to seek help Sunday evening and then was unable to guide searchers to Robert Palmer.

Authorities described Robert Palmer as insulin-dependent and suffering from knee problems.
