WACO, Texas — A paramedic is in critical condition after being hit by a drunk driver Saturday.

KXXV reported that Rory Barros was responding to a vehicle crash when the incident occurred. As he was getting out of the ambulance, he was hit by a drunk driver who failed to stay in his lane, pinning Barros between the vehicle and the ambulance.

Barros was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

“The plan is to stabilize his blood pressure and then perform exploratory surgery in an attempt to find an internal bleed,” Waco Police Department Sgt. Patrick Swanton said.

Alec Nava, 36, was arrested and charged with intoxicated assault on a public servant.

“The men and women of ETMC are an extremely valuable resource to our community, saving our citizens’ lives every day. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with this line of duty injury,” Sgt. Swanton said.
