Hockey player, paramedic revives fan before game

Gander Flyers goalie Patrick O’Brien ran from the dressing room and began chest compressions on an unresponsive fan in cardiac arrest

NEWFOUNDLAND, Canada — Gander Flyers goalie Patrick O’Brien, who also works as a paramedic, revived a fan who went into cardiac arrest before Sunday’s game against the Corner Brook Royals.

O’Brien, a Central Health paramedic in the Airport Town, raced from the dressing room wearing his skates, hockey pants and one goal pad when he heard a middle-aged man was unresponsive, the Gandor Beacon reports.

The Gander mayor and two retired paramedics were also on the scene assisting the man.

“I just hopped in and started chest compressions,” said O’Brien, 26. He had graduated from his paramedic program in June.

He also shocked him twice with a defibrillator before on-duty medics arrived. The man is reported to be in stable condition.

“There was lots of help,” O’Brien said.
