NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sumner County EMS Captain Shane Clifford died of COVID-19 complications, WSMV reported.

First responders escorted his body from Vanderbilt University Medical Center to a funeral home Monday. He had been in the hospital for more than 20 days and also had pneumonia.

Clifford started working for the agency in 2002 as an EMT and worked his way up in the ranks.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

Clifford was known for his generosity, according to Summer County EMS Chief Greg Miller.

“Captain Clifford has been an incredible asset to our community for many years, saving countless lives throughout his career. Captain Clifford will be greatly missed,” the county sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

A fundraiser for his family has raised over $17,200 so far.
