Procession planned to honor retired Aurora medic who died from COVID-19 after work in NYC

The large procession of fire and EMS vehicles is expected to leave the Denver International Airport around 7:30 or 8 p.m.

DENVER — A retired Aurora paramedic who volunteered in New York City during the coronavirus pandemic and then succumbed to the virus himself will be honored with a procession Sunday when his body is returned to Denver.

Paul Cary’s body will be flown into Denver International Airport about 7 p.m. Sunday and then will be escorted from the airport to the Olinger Hampden Funeral Home and Cemetery in the 8600 block of East Hampden Avenue.

A large procession of fire and EMS vehicles are expected to leave the airport around 7:30 p.m. or 8 p.m., according to the company Cary worked with, Ambulnz. The company has been operating 29 ambulances in New York City since March 30 and nearly 75 employees volunteered to work there.

Cary, 66, was one of those volunteers. He was a 32-year veteran of Aurora Fire Rescue, a firefighter paramedic. He is survived by two sons and four grandchildren.

The public is invited to line the procession’s route to show support. The procession will travel the following route from the airport to the funeral home:

South on Pena Boulevard

Pena Boulevard to Interstate 70 West

Interstate 225 south to East Colfax Avenue

Colfax Avenue to Ursula Street, then right on Ursula to 16th Avenue

Left on 16th to Quentin Street, left on Quentin

East on Colfax Avenue

Colfax Avenue to Potomac Street, south on Potomac

Continue on Potomac to the Medical Center of Aurora

Potomac to Jewell, west on East Jewell Avenue

Jewell to South Havana Street, south on Havana

Procession ends at 8600 East Hampden Avenue
