WASHINGTON — A D.C. Fire and EMS EMT saved a young boy after he was shot Saturday.

Veronica Barkersville was attending her niece’s baby shower when she heard gunshots and people yelling, reported WJLA. After the shots, Barkersville grabbed an emergency kit from her car and began assisting the 7-year-old boy.

“He was alert. He made eye contact with me and he let me know, you know, what was on him that was hurt. I kept trying to talk to him and controlling the bleeding at the same time trying to keep him calm until help came,” Barkersville said.

Paramedics arrived on scene within minutes and took the boy to the hospital, where he is expected to recover.

“God placed me here with this child for a reason -- to help somebody. And as long as I’m here, that’s my job. I’m gonna help somebody,” Barkersville said.
