SANTA ROSA, Calif. — A man suffered life-threatening injuries after jumping from a sixth story window of downtown Santa Rosa’s Rosenberg Building Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The man, who fire officials believed to be in his 30s or 40s, landed on Mendocino Avenue right in front of bystanders Gueneville couple Justin Peters and his wife Summer Morris-Peters.

The two were on their way back to their car after lunch, walking along Mendocino Avenue when, just before 2 p.m., a loud crash caught their attention — the sound of a potted plant dropping from a sixth story window across the street.

Horrified, the two watched as a man started climbing out of raised blinds in the window. As Peters looked on for a few seconds more, the man stood up, back facing toward the street, and jumped — his feet and legs in the air.

“I shouted, ‘No!’,” Peters said.

He looked away at the last second, before he heard what he described as a “humongous smack.”

“When the fire department and ambulance personnel got there, (the man) was alive and very seriously injured,” said Santa Rosa Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Basque.

Fire Captain Sage Howell said the man was conscious but “wasn’t really intelligible, and he was kind off fighting us, so it took us a few minutes to get him packaged up for transport.”

The window from which the man jumped was open, missing a screen.

Santa Rosa police could not immediately provide details on the incident.

The man was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. His condition was unknown.
