PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Portsmouth Ambulance is once again offering their scholarship program for individuals interested in exploring a career as an emergency medical technician (EMT).

Last semester, Portsmouth Ambulance worked with Shawnee State University (SSU) to offer seven scholarships of $700 each, plus books in order to help combat emergency medical service shortages. Portsmouth Ambulance also offered three interest free loans to current employees interested in furthering their education.

“This year we plan on expanding that program,” Rachael Estep with Portsmouth Ambulance stated.

Estep explained that the program did so well last semester that this semester the company will be offering 24 scholarships.

“We’re having good success out of everyone that we’ve sponsored so far,” she added.

Though the students have not completed their state testing yet, Estep says the grades throughout the semester have been a good indicator that the students are working hard and taking the program seriously.

“We just wanted to give more people in the community an opportunity for a career,” Estep commented.

Scholarship application information is accessible from the Portsmouth Emergency Ambulance Service Facebook page or on the company’s website at www.portsmouthambulance.org. Interested applicants can also stop in the Portsmouth Ambulance office located at 2796 Gallia Street in Portsmouth. Applications should be submitted to Portsmouth Ambulance to the attention of the education department. Applicants are required to provide a copy of their high school transcripts and to write an essay. Scholarships are available to the public and to all Portsmouth Ambulance employees.

The application deadline is December 29. Classes will begin again in January.
