BOSTON — Boston EMS Station One got a facelift in honor of One Boston Day, a new April 15 annual tradition inspired by the Boston Marathon bombing that marks the resiliency, generosity and strength of the people in the city.
WHDH 7News, Lowe’s, Paul’s TV and community volunteers worked together to update the Purchase Street EMS station as a way to say thank you to the first responders who did so much not just on the day of the bombing, by every day, WHDH reports.
Donations to the station included a new refrigerator, microwave, lamp, coffee table, two couches, a new paint job and two flat screen TV’s (the station’s previous TV was stolen while EMTs were out on a call.)
“We’ve sort of been through that recovery period for the city where we need to be resilient and bounce back,” said paramedic Gregory Bond. “Instead of looking backwards we need to concentrate on the future and how we’re going to make Boston even stronger than we were two years ago.”
EMS providers now have a cleaned up place to relax, and Boston EMS Chief Jim Hooley said responders appreciate the unexpected gesture.
“It’s touching that Lowe’s and Channel 7 are all willing to do this for us,” he said. “But if you ask any of our folks who were there that day, they were all doing their jobs. But it still it means a lot that you’re doing this today.”
Volunteers from Lowe’s have vowed to help update EMS stations across the city once a month.
