AUSTIN, Texas — A mother whose baby was saved by paramedics after a premature home birth reunited with the crew who saved him.
CBS Austin reported that Yazmeen Tuskan went into labor early at her home several months ago, and responding Austin-Travis County EMS providers worked to save baby Leo.
ATCEMS Captain Matthew Pearson said Leo was barely the size of his hand when he was born.
“Two fingered CPR was almost too big,” Pearson said.
After a four-month stay in the NICU, Leo was finally discharged, and Tuskan began searching for the crew that helped save him.
“I just called Austin EMS and said, ‘Hey, this is a strange request, I’m fine, but I’m really trying to track down this team that responded to my home,’” she said.
Tuskan was able to reunite with the crew, and Pearson said he was happy to see Leo in good health.
“I didn’t think that baby was going to survive,” Pearson said. “And to see him happy and healthy is amazing.”
Tuskan said that while the paramedics don’t consider themselves heroes, she is forever grateful.
“It’s maybe not quite the entry into the world we wanted,” she said. “Every morning when we see him, we greet him, we say good morning, he’s laughing and smiling. He wouldn’t be doing those things if it weren’t for you guys.”
