JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man fled the scene after hitting five cars, and then called paramedics to treat him for possible injuries hours later.

First Coast News reported that the suspect had dropped his grandmother off at a Food for Florida FEMA assistance location, according to police. When pulling out of the parking lot, he hit five cars before getting out of the vehicle and running away.

A K-9 unit was dispatched to find the man, only described as in his 20s, but could not locate him.

Hours later, the suspect called paramedics after fleeing to a Wal-Mart to be treated for injuries he could have possibly sustained from the crashes. He was not injured.

Police questioned the suspect, who gave them multiple stories about what happened, including that his car was hijacked and that he fell asleep at the wheel. He finally confessed and said he ran away because he was scared.

The suspect’s grandmother was still in line at the FEMA location, unaware of what happened before police informed her. Family members arrived to pick her up and said they were upset because the suspect did not know how to drive.

The man is charged with reckless driving, driving without a license and five counts of hit and run.
