A 27-year-old Milwaukee man was killed early Monday when the pickup truck he was driving collided with an ambulance responding to a call from a woman in labor.
Milwaukee police said the crash occurred at S. 9th Place and W. Oklahoma Ave. about 1:30 a.m. Inspector Vincent Flores said the ambulance had its lights and siren on.
The private ambulance, from Bell Ambulance, was headed east on Oklahoma Ave., police said. A flashing yellow light controls traffic on Oklahoma at that intersection. The truck driver, Scott Larson of Milwaukee, heading south on 9th Place, had a flashing red light but did not stop at the intersection, according to police.
The ambulance struck the pickup truck, and the truck went out of control and hit a pole. The ambulance overturned.
Larson was dead on arrival at a hospital. Two crew members were in the ambulance: a 24-year-old woman, who was driving and had cuts on her forehead, and a 29-year-old man, who was not seriously injured, Flores said.
Steve Johnson, director of operations for Bell, had no comment on the crash.
Flores said it was not known what became of the woman in labor. He said police investigators were working on reconstructing what happened as part of their investigation.
