DUNSTABLE — A 20-month-old child was pulled from a small pond on Main Street on Friday night after she went missing for very short time, according to police.

Police Chief James Downes III said police were called to 417 Main St., about 6:30 p.m., for reports of a possible child in the water in a small pond in front of the home.

When officers arrived on the scene, a man, who was soaking wet, and a woman were holding their 20-month-old daughter, who was also soaking wet.

“It appeared the daughter was missing for a very, very short amount of time,” Downes said.

The parents found their young daughter in the water and pulled her out, he added.

The girl, who was conscious and alert, was treated at the scene by police and fire officials for hypothermia, Downes said. She was brought to Lowell General Hospital by ambulance for observation.

Downes said the latest information police received on the condition of the girl was that she was under observation and not in critical condition.

Downes declined to release the name of the young girl.

He said the parents were deeply distressed.

Dunstable is a Middlesex County community about eight miles east of Townsend. Its population is 3,179 residents, according to the 2010 Census.
