Clarence Maly is back in the shadows again.
He and other volunteer firefighters in Oklahoma were thrust into the headlines as they battled a fierce wildfire season that lasted from November 2005 through this spring.
“We’re really back in the shadows,” said Maly, volunteer fire chief for the Waukomis Fire Department and chairman of the Garfield County Public Safety Association. “People really don’t think of us until they need us. And when they need us, they want us there (immediately).”
The Waukomis Fire Department, near Enid, Okla., is one of more than 900 Oklahoma volunteer departments, which constitute 93 percent of the state’s fire departments. ...
