MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — The city will begin to charge insurance companies for EMS transport runs to the hospitals, with the hopes of bringing in extra revenue. The new practice, however, will affect different people in the county in different ways.
In December, Council adopted legislation authorizing the Safety Service Director to enter into a contract with Healthserve, a Dayton-based company that handles medical billing for municipalities. This came after the topic of billing for EMS runs had been discussed by council members for the better part of a year. In September, former councilman Larry Schafer, who did much to make EMS billing a practice of the city, said the expected revenue ranged between $400,000 and $500,000 and could allow the city to delay increasing income tax.
Mayor Richard Mavis explained that residents of the city, those who work in the city, and those who live in contracted areas of neighboring townships will not be billed for the balance of the run. All of Clinton and Pleasant townships and about half of Morris Township fall within lie within the contracted area.
