OTTAWA, Ohio — Rescue crews throughout Putnam County face a desperate need for volunteers, even the once-strong Ottawa Emergency Medical Service squad, its assistant chief said Tuesday.
“Unfortunately, Ottawa’s catching up with the rest of the county,” Phil Griffith told the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon. “We’re short on days. Don’t be too surprised to see a squad coming out from the county instead of here. We’re still able to go out during our free time, but there’s no such thing as free time anymore.”
Griffith, a volunteer with the 27-member force since 1983, said the squad had 898 runs from November 2004 to November 2005, accounting for 34 percent of the 2,629 runs in the county. That’s a lot for a volunteer force to handle.
