Dramatic rescue off New Jersey coast

By 6ABC.com (Philadelphia)

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The captain of a scallop boat is in critical condition Monday night after he was badly injured earlier that day in an on board accident.

The US Coast Guard Atlantic City received a frantic distress call at about 5 this morning from the scallop board shoreline. It was dark...there was fog and the boat was 45 miles off Atlantic City.

In about 20 minutes the Coast Guard chopper was over the boat and rescue swimmer Lee Gorun, also an EMT, was lowered to the boat where Captain Hector Linarte had suffered severe injuries including the loss of his left hand. Quick work by the Coast Guard likely saved Linarte’s life.
