A South Oroville man suffered an accidental gunshot wound to the stomach and was flown to the hospital in Chico by the Enloe FlightCare helicopter Tuesday.
At about 11:10 a.m., the Emergency Command Center received a report of the injury at a residence on the 2300 block of Ithaca Street.
El Medio’s Engine 312 was dispatched and arrived first on scene with Captain Scott Marglin, Engineer Donald Robinson, and Firefighters Adam Nystuen and Ethan Elvis along with Engineer Brian Simpson.
The gunshot victim was lying on the kitchen floor unconscious with what appeared to be a wound to the upper right stomach area from a .25 caliber handgun, according to Marglin.
Butte County Sheriff’s Sgt. Paul Leveto confirmed the shooting incident was the result of an accidental self-inflicted gun shot to the abdomen.
Oroville City’s Engine 111 with Captain Carol Sisk and Engineer John Gaddie were also dispatched and arrived on scene. Marglin called for the Enloe FlightCare helicopter to land in the El Medio Fire Department parking lot, which was a few blocks away from Ithaca Street. Sisk called for Butte County Sheriff’s Office patrol units to close off traffic to Myers Street in front of the fire department to secure the area for the helicopter.
The patient was transported from the Ithaca Street address to the El Medio Fire Department via First Responders ambulance. Gaddie was in charge of the landing zone and made sure the area was secure while the FlightCare helicopter landed. According to Marglin, the man appeared to be in critical condition.
The helicopter landed without incident and at about 11:50 a.m. lifted off and ferried the patient to Enloe Medical Center in Chico.
