Pedestrian killed after car, ambulance collide

The man was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, but later succumbed to his injuries

FLEMINGTON, Australia — A pedestrian was killed after an ambulance was struck by a car Wednesday afternoon.

TheAge.com.au reported that the ambulance was on call when it struck the side of a car, pushing it toward a tram stop. The car then struck a man, believed to be in his 40s, who was standing at the stop. The man was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, but later succumbed to his injuries.

Witnesses said the ambulance was traveling with its lights and sirens on.

“I pulled the back end of the car and there was a couple of other people pushing the front of it and we got the car away from the pole and the poor guy just sort of fell to the ground,” witness Jason Biderman said.

Two occupants in the car and two paramedics were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

“Our thoughts and sympathy are with the family of the man during this difficult time,” Mick Stephenson, Ambulance Victoria acting general manager, said. “The two paramedics involved in the collision have also been taken to the hospital and will be supported by Ambulance Victoria.”

Detective Sergeant Mark Patrick said the collision was “no one’s fault,” according to the report.

“It’s very sad circumstances that someone was just standing by waiting to catch and tram and this collision here has occurred,” he said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
