Man repeatedly crashes into ambulance after refusing treatment

The man claimed the paramedics didn’t want to help him so he was driving himself to the hospital

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — A man who refused treatment from emergency responders struck an ambulance with his vehicle several times before police arrived Monday.

The Chillico Gazette reported that medics were called to assist a person in pain. When they arrived, they met 71-year-old Stuart Phillips, who became upset as they spoke with him. Phillips was allegedly yelling at an EMS provider, telling them to “shut up” and pointing a finger in the paramedic’s face. A second paramedic told Phillips they would take him to the hospital, but he refused assistance and walked away.

The paramedics got back into the ambulance and Phillips got into his car and began backing his vehicle toward the ambulance. Phillips allegedly continued to pull forward and back into the side of the ambulance four times, according to the report.

The three paramedics were able to get out of the ambulance. Phillips circled around and hit the front of the ambulance, which pushed the rig into the rear of a parked car. The paramedics were able to open the driver and passenger side of Phillips’ car and took the keys out of the ignition.

Phillips walked to the back of the ambulance, got inside and laid on the cot until police arrived. He told police he had medical issues and the medics didn’t want to help him so he was driving himself to the hospital.

Phillips was taken to jail and charged with three counts of felonious assault. No paramedics were injured in the incident, but the ambulance sustained a moderate amount of damage.
